Hourly Fisheries Technician (ArcGIS) - Bureau of Shellfisheries


Date: Upon filling of position

Location: Nacote Creek Research Station, 360 N. New York Road (MM 51), Port Republic (Atlantic Co.)

Job Description: Part-time hourly position performing GIS and other data management tasks for the Marine Fisheries Administration, NJ Bureau of Shellfisheries. Major projects include development of aquaculture, fisheries, and marine benthic habitat resource mapping. Work will be performed using geodatabases with feature class creation, editing, and attribute table development and maintenance. Work will include transferring data in paper-based format to electronic files and general database management. Employee will be expected to work independently and use critical and analytical thinking to produce deliverables. This is an office based position but other duties may include field and laboratory work.

Requirements: Completion of a degree or minor in GIS. Experience with natural/marine resource management or natural resource mapping strongly desired. Skills in:

  • Geodatabase creation and maintenance
  • Feature and attribute creation and editing
  • Georeferencing, geocoding
  • Cartography/Symbology/Layout
  • ArcGIS Online
  • Strong general computer skills
  • Strong Quality Assurance/Quality Control background
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Experience with MS Excel

Job Duration: Part-time (2-3 days/wk year-round), not to exceed 944 hours per State fiscal year. Consideration will be given to allow employee to work all allotted hours on a full-time basis for approximately 4 months.

Compensation: $15 - $20/hour, depending upon experience
