Seasonal Fisheries Technician (Field/Office) Bureau of Shellfisheries

 

Date: Upon filling of position

Location: Nacote Creek Research Station, 360 N. New York Road (MM 51), Port Republic (Atlantic Co.)

Job Description: Assist with field, laboratory and data processing for bivalve shellfish surveys, management, and enhancement projects with the Marine Fisheries Administration Bureau of Shellfisheries. Perform data entry, file management, research. Duties include but are not limited to:

1) Small boat operation;
2) Maintenance of outboard engines and vessels;
3) Operating hand tools for shellfish sampling;
4) Assisting with deployment and retrieval of hydraulically powered sampling equipment;
5) Collecting and recording water quality data with various meters;
6) Maintenance of buildings, grounds, vehicles, boats, trailers, and equipment;
7) Data entry and office file management;
8) Literature review/research and report composition;
9) Website content development;
10) Recording, entering and proofing data;
11) Laboratory analysis of benthic shellfish and sediment samples.
Field work will be performed on board the Bureau's research vessels as well as commercial fishing vessels. Field work occurs in the bays/estuaries and Atlantic Ocean.

Requirements: Completion of the NJ boating safety course and small-boat operation or sailing experience is strongly preferred. Experience working on engines (marine or otherwise) and power tools is a plus. Applicant must be available to work year round. A degree in fisheries management, marine science, aquaculture, wildlife biology or ecology is preferred. Applicants should be in good physical condition (able to lift 40 lbs.) and willing and able to work outdoors and on vessels in all types of weather and buggy conditions.

Candidate should be proficient in MS Office programs. Candidate must possess a driver license valid in New Jersey. Experience with ArcGIS is a plus.

Job Duration: Year-round; work is concentrated from April through October (field season) with reduced work hours November through March.

Compensation: $10.00 per hour.
