Hunter Education FAQs

NJ Hunter Education has had to suspend its regular home study/classroom/field day program due to restrictions imposed by the statewide response to the corona virus pandemic and COVID-19. A modified program utilizing the HunterCourse.com online hunter education program and the live-fire requirement is now available to students not choosing to wait for the regular program to resume or obtain an Apprentice License which allows issuance of a license without proof of hunter education or previous license - restrictions apply.)

The following FAQs provide information on the most commonly asked questions about the temporary program:

 1. WHY CAN'T THE DIVISION OFFER THE TRADITIONAL CLASS?
 2. WHY MUST I TAKE THE ONLINE COURSE AND NOT JUST COMPLETE THE HOME STUDY WORKBOOK AND DVD?
 3. WHAT IF I ONLY WANT TO TAKE THE FIREARMS OR ARCHERY CLASS AND NOT BOTH?
 4. WHAT IF I ALREADY HAVE MY SHOTGUN EDUCATION AND ONLY NEED TO GET MY FIREARMS (RIFLE/MUZZLELOADER)?
 5. WHAT IF I ALREADY COMPLETED MY WORKBOOK OR DON'T WANT TO TAKE THE ONLINE COURSE?
 6. CAN I ATTEND LIVE-FIRE SESSION AS A WALK-IN IF I SEE AN AVAILABLE DATE ONLINE?
 7. HOW DO I REGISTER FOR A LIVE-FIRE SESSION?

1. WHY CAN'T THE DIVISION OFFER THE TRADITIONAL CLASS?
Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, indoor gatherings are restricted to no more than 25% of a room's capacity or 50 people total, whichever is lower. Our available classrooms spaces would generally not allow for class sizes larger than 20 or so, and that would include instructors. Normal class size ranges from 80 to 100 or more. We just don't have the capacity to come close to meeting demand.

2. WHY MUST I TAKE THE ONLINE COURSE AND NOT JUST COMPLETE THE HOME STUDY WORKBOOK AND DVD?
Due to COVID-19 restrictions and social distancing guidelines, the Division's Hunter Education program is unable to offer any classroom sessions at this time. The workbook alone does not meet curriculum standards and requires the student to follow up with a class session and in-person written exam. As this is not possible at the moment, we are limited to the HunterCourse.com program paired with a live-fire session only. The online program includes virtual field walks and our full written exam, and does not need to be accompanied by any class sessions, only the outdoor live-fire portion

3. WHAT IF I ONLY WANT TO TAKE THE FIREARMS OR ARCHERY CLASS AND NOT BOTH?
Unfortunately, the online program requires students to complete both archery and firearms sections and the full exam to receive the completion voucher to bring to a scheduled live-fire day. When registering for the live-fire portion, the student will only need to sign up for the portion(s) he/she wishes to complete that day. If a student only wishes to complete one discipline, he/she may keep the HunterCourse completion voucher, which has no expiration date, to use if returning at a later date to complete the other discipline.

4. WHAT IF I ALREADY HAVE MY SHOTGUN EDUCATION AND ONLY NEED TO GET MY RIFLE/MUZZLELOADER?
Since there is no live-fire requirement for the rifle/muzzleloader portion of the course, completion of the HunterCourse.com program and final exam (included in the program) is sufficient. Upon completion, scans or photos of the voucher and previous Firearm/All-around license, or Shotgun Hunter Education Card, should be e-mailed from the student to Hunter Education staff so that the information can be entered into the system. Please send to:
Keith Griglak (north) or Sam Forlenza (south).

5. WHAT IF I ALREADY COMPLETED MY WORKBOOK OR DON'T WANT TO TAKE THE ONLINE COURSE?
Due to program changes in response to COVID-19 the online HunterCourse.com course is the only hunter education option at this time. Obtaining an Apprentice License is also an option.

6. CAN I ATTEND A LIVE-FIRE SESSION AS A WALK-IN IF I SEE AN AVAILABLE DATE ONLINE?
No, not at this time. Because of the approach being taken to reduce person to person contact, walk-in paperwork will not be available. All certifications will be done digitally and can only be done for those who are pre-registered for a live-fire session.

7. HOW DO I REGISTER FOR A LIVE-FIRE SESSION?
Registration is open for live-fire range sessions beginning in August. When registering for a specific date and location, please make sure you register for each discipline you plan to complete. Be mindful of the time slot that you are selecting. Live-fire sessions will be offered in 1-hour increments to reduce crowds of students. Please arrive for the time slot that you selected, as it is imperative for the event to flow smoothly. Register NOW!
