Hourly Fisheries Technician (GIS) - Bureau of Marine Fisheries


Date: Upon filling of position

Location: Nacote Creek Research Station, 360 N. New York Road (MM 51), Port Republic (Atlantic Co.)

Job Description: Part-time hourly position performing GIS and other data management tasks for the Bureau of Marine Fisheries. Major projects include habitat resource mapping for the Artificial Reef Program. Work will be performed using geodatabases with feature class creation, editing, and attribute table development and maintenance.

Work will include transferring data in paper-based format to electronic files and general database management. Employee will be expected to work independently and use critical and analytical thinking to produce deliverables. Employees will be expected to coordinate with Bureau of GIS representatives. This is an office based position and all work must be performed on-site in Port Republic. Remote access is not authorized. Occasional field work onboard Bureau vessels in estuarine waters and in the Atlantic Ocean will be required.

Requirements: Completion of a degree, minor, or certificate program in GIS. Experience with natural/marine resource management or natural resource mapping strongly desired. Consideration will be given to GIS students entering their senior year, having already completed entry/intermediate level GIS coursework. Skills should include:

  • Geodatabase creation and maintenance
  • Feature and attribute creation and editing
  • Georeferencing
  • Geocoding
  • Cartography/Symbology/Layout
  • ArcGIS Online
  • Strong general computer skills
  • Strong Quality Assurance/Quality Control background
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Experience with MS Excel

Job Duration: Part-time, not to exceed 944 hours per State fiscal year.

Compensation: $10 - $15/hour, depending upon experience
