Wildlife Disease Technician (Hourly)

Location: Clinton WMA, Hunterdon County and/or Pequest Trout Hatchery, Warren County

The Office of Fish & Wildlife Health & Forensics is seeking a part-time employee to assist with fish and wildlife disease investigations, wildlife health surveillance and research. The position shall not exceed 900 hours worked within a single year.

The candidate is required to report to the Wildlife Pathology Lab in Clinton and/or the Fish Health Lab at the Pequest Trout Hatchery in Oxford. This is an excellent opportunity to work collaboratively with state biologists and other agencies to investigate and survey fish and wildlife populations for important and emerging disease threats.

Job Description: The employee is expected to assist the Divisionís wildlife veterinarian with investigations of wildlife mortality throughout the state, dissect and collect tissue samples from wildlife species, help to maintain a wildlife health reporting database, assist with sampling deer for the stateís chronic wasting disease surveillance program and assist with fish health cases and research projects conducted in the office. Duties will include sample collection from the field, laboratory processing of tissue samples and report writing.

Education: A bachelorís degree with a focus on wildlife biology and/or animal disease is required; preference will be given to candidates with animal health experience. Experience in a laboratory or research setting would be a benefit for this position.

Preferred Qualifications: The individual should be self-motivated and have a strong background or interest in wildlife disease along with laboratory experience. It is preferred that the individual have experience with animal dissections and laboratory experience in histology, microbiology, and/or molecular biology techniques. The individual should have strong writing skills. Experience working with various wildlife species is desirable.

Compensation: $14-$17 per hour, dependent on qualifications and experience.
