Humus Tract, Forsythe NWR

The NJ Department of Environmental Protection ("NJDEP") proposes to sell to the United States of America ("United States") approximately 619 acres of land identified on the Official Tax Map of Stafford Township, Ocean County as Block 296, Lots 33 and 34. The property has no road frontage and is surrounded on three sides by the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge ("Refuge").

The property, known as the "Humus Tract", was purchased by the NJDEP in 2006 for $648,120.00 to preserve this wooded wetland property until the United States could obtain the funding to purchase the property from NJDEP and formally make it a part of the Refuge. The Humus Tract has been managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service as a part of the Refuge since its purchase by NJDEP.

Written public comments will be accepted through March 15, 2019.

Upon completion of public comment period, the proposed sale of the Humus Tract is subject to the approval of the Commissioner of the NJDEP and the State House Commission. If the proposed sale is approved, the property will be sold to the United States for $867,600.00. The proceeds of the sale will be returned to the Garden State Preservation Trust Fund for future State acquisition purposes.
